Why won't my dog let me trim their nails at home but they are fine if the groomer or vet does it?
Dogs are more comfortable at home with their owner. At the groomer or vet, dogs can go into what is called a "freeze state." They may appear to be calm on the outside but on the inside they are feeling so frightened that their nervous system goes into a shut down state.
Why can't you just hold them and get it done?
Forcing a dog through a procedure when they are actively trying to escape is not only frightening but it is a safety issue. We risk cutting the quick or injuring your pet. Using force will not help your dog be calm for the next time and can actually make the problem worse.
Can't I just bring my pet to the vet and have them sedated for the procedure?
Sedation at the vet can be an option for dogs who are having a hard time with grooming procedures. However, this is expensive and poses a health risk, especially with older dogs who may not be able to safety go under sedation.
How long does this training take?
This depends on your dog and the amount of time you commit to practicing at home. Training can take more time depending on their previous level of fear and how often they were previously forced through a procedure.
